What is the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act?

Who could forget the moment when we learned that Hidilyn Diaz won the country’s first gold in the Olympics? Many Filipinos were delighted, and we sent our accolades via social media.

A few, meanwhile, sent more than just congratulations. Many business tycoons have presented Hidilyn with millions in cash, a condo unit, a house and lot and other gifts. Other businesses have given her gifts, like unlimited milk tea for a year, free breakfast and burgers for a lifetime, free flights, and more.

As a small business, how can you also incentivize national athletes like Hidilyn? Well, you can also offer your products for free to the medal-winning athletes, and promote that announcement on your social media pages.

But if you do not have that budget, you can make it known that your business follows Republic Act 10699, or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act. This law mandates that national athletes and their coaches deserve a 20% discount on restaurants, hotels, transportation, medicines and leisure activities.

To avail, the athlete or coach just has to present the ID and booklet issued by the Philippine Sports Commission.

This law is fairly new, so some entrepreneurs may not be aware of it. Make sure that your staff is also aware so that they are ready to entertain national athletes availing of the discount.

You can also print a related sticker or poster and attach it to your window so that the athletes would be comfortable availing the discount in your store.

This way, the athletes won’t be hesitant or be afraid to ask for the discount.
